LIGHTING DESIGN
Lighting plays a vital role in the quality of our daily lives. At work, in offices, production or logistical facilities, good lighting brings employee satisfaction, performance, comfort and safety. In shops, galleries and public places, it creates ambience and helps to accentuates the architectural environment.
Different Light Sources to Set the Scene
Keep in mind that to be able to set the scene with the lighting in home, you’ll likely need a variety of different lighting sources. This is not an exhaustive list but as a rule of thumb, we recommend these three different lighting sources to be able to create the desired contrast, light levels and focal points for almost any occasion:
Ambient Lighting
Consider this as the main lighting in a room. Ambient lighting would be the light fittings that provide the uniform lighting throughout a room without taking into consideration any focal areas. Ambient lighting would commonly be the grid-style layout of LED spots in the kitchen or the central pendant in a bedroom, for example
Task Lighting
This form of lighting is usually focused on specific parts of a room for when, as the name suggests, specific tasks are being carried out. This could be reading a book, getting dressed, putting on make-up, or cooking. For example, it would be useful to have a more concentrated source of light on a kitchen worktop. This could be achieved with LED Strip lighting beneath the upper row of the kitchen cabinetry.
Accent Lighting
The third source of lighting we’d suggest you consider is accent lighting. This includes pendant lighting such as a LED Pendulum Slim which is ideal for over the dining room table or breakfast bar in the kitchen. These also allow you to create a focal point of lighting to draw attention to a specific piece of furnishing in the room.
TYPES OF LIGHTING
LIGHTING CONTROL METHODS
Basic Function
Lighting controls are input/output devices and systems. The control system receives information, decides what to do with it, and then adjusts lighting power accordingly. Here, we see a basic lighting circuit (switch leg). Power travels along the circuit to energize a group of lights. This lighting system supplies illumination.
Switching
One basic output is switching. Here we see a switch placed on the line between the power source and the load. When the switch closes (i.e., switch is flipped “ON”), the circuit completes, allowing power to flow to the load. When it opens, the circuit breaks (switched flipped “OFF”), which disrupts power to the load. This makes the switch a power controller.
Dimming
Another basic output is dimming. If a dimmer switch is used, in addition to ON/OFF, it can alter current flowing through the load during the ON state, which raises or lowers light output. Here we see a dimmer placed on the line, with the output being continuous dimming over the load’s dimming range.

What is Lighting Channel?
In lighting channel, we install a number of light spots and set turning On/Off for a group of lights.
Example;
- 4 lighting channel on each channel we install a number of light spots
- Each lighting channel has a load of current consumed
- Each lighting channel is controlled by output relay
- Lighting channel is a group of lights spots turning On/OFF together
How to calculate load of a lighting channel?
Amp = Watt/Volt
How to use this tool:
Watts is also known as volt-amps and is typically used in conjunction with AC power circuits. Fill in any of the two fields to find the value of the third.
Example
The spot light power supply is a 240V AC power supply that can power up to 40 VA.
1.Enter 240 under volts
2.Enter 40 under watts
3.Click calculate
4.You get 0,025 A in this example.
So, the spot light can supply up to 0,025 Amps at 240V AC.
Watt calculation of lighting channel = 50w X 6 = 300 w
Amp calculation of lighting channel = 300W / 240V = 1,25 Amp
So we need a controller switch with nominal current > 1,25 Amp

How to control lights with a classic installation?
In a classic house, the lighting points are connected to a switch. The current is sent to the switch and this one allows or not to pass the current to the lighting depending on whether you want to turn the lighting on or off (like your bedside lamp).
How TIS can control lights with relay?
In an automated home, the lighting and the switch are not physically connected (except for modules without interposed wires). Actuation of the switch triggers the sending of a message to the home automation system ordering the lighting or extinction of the lamp. The lighting is connected to the TIS relay module which is activated to let the current flow or not depending on the order received. The on or off order can come from several sources: switches, tablet, programming,….

TIS Relays modules come with different types of channels and Amperes.
There are many things to consider when choosing the right relay in a project;
The number of channels you want to control
The loads for lighting channel
In emergency situations, manual control is so important. TIS has provided some devices that can do manual control, for example RLY-8CH-16A has a mechanical emergency switch that turns ON/OFF lights without the needs of power supply
We recommend you use at least one of this relay in each project
Dimmer
What is a dimmer?
It's an adjustable transformer used to vary the level of lighting from 0 to 100% of lighting power.
Types of Dimmer
Each type of lighting source (load types) has individual characteristics, which require a special type of dimmers. It is important to use a dimmer that is designed for your specific lighting source/load.
- Leading Edge (LE) Dimmers: these dimmers function with TRIAC technology and can be utilized to dim incandescent and halogen lights.
- Trailing Edge (TE) Dimmer: these are universal dimmers, capable of dimming all types of lights (LED, incandescent & halogen lights)

There are many things to consider when choosing the right dimmer;
The number of channels you want to control
The loads for lighting channel
The type of load that is going to be controlled by dimmer (LED, incandescent & halogen)
After these considerations, you should choose between:
- Leading Edge (LE) Dimmer
- Trailing Edge (TE) Dimmer
There are many things to consider when dimming LEDs;
When dimming LED lamps :
Check the new LED lamps are dimmable before purchasing
Ensure your current dimmers are compatible with your new LED lamps
Well-known brands, tend to have been tested with a wider range of dimmers
Establish the minimum and maximum loads of the dimmer. This will allow you to know how many lights are needed on the circuit
It is recommended, to ensure the best quality dimming, that old leading-edge dimmers are replaced with the trailing edge
Ensure the maximum load of the dimmer (remembering the 10% rule for trail edge dimmers) is not exceeded by the total wattage of the LED lamps
Make sure you have a combination of dimmable lamps and dimmer modules that work together, before purchasing
What is a wall panel and why do we need it?
The wall panel is a kind of super switch. It fits on our walls, at the right height so that the wording of its various keys is clearly visible. This type of product comes mainly from the United States. Its format is therefore classically vertical, unlike the square format of our European switches.
It will offer different keys which correspond to as many different functions. We could do the same thing by multiplying classic switches side by side, but it would be less stylish. Here, the buttons are small, next to each other and with the title of their function. there are many functions. Touch screens and other mobile applications are perfect for keeping an eye on the entire system and accessing any command On a daily basis, you do not necessarily need to have permanent access to all the functions. We also don't want to take out our smartphone all the time for the slightest thing to do. It's a bit of a hassle just to turn on a radio in the kitchen or launch a light scenario in the living room.
That's where wall-mounted panel come in! Indeed, their few well-chosen keys will allow you to launch the most recurring commands on a daily basis; one key to start the music, one to close all roller shutters, and another to turn on all mood lights, so the possibilities are limitless.

How to choose the right panel for the right place?
These questions help you find out:
1- What functions you expect the panel to have? Is it lighting, temperature, curtain, floor heating, or audio control?
For example, in living rooms, lighting, AC, and audio control in addition to smart scenarios are needed, so you can select a panel that is capable of doing all those functions. Luna TFT, Titan, and Saturn are a few examples.
2- How many functions you need the panel to have
For example, if you only want smart lighting for three lighting channels, you can select a panel with the similar options, such as Titan-3G, Titan-4G, or TER-4G
3- Where should the panel be installed? Is it the kitchen, living room, master room, or the entrance?
4- How big is the cutomer’s budget?

Some TIS wall panels, such as Luna, Mars, and some products in the Terre series need an extra piece installed behind them to be configured with the BUS network and start functioning. The Panel Addition is a small module designed to fit at the back of wall switches to enable them to set lights, FCU, curtains, motors, and more.

Now, let’s go through all the mentioned steps to see how they are done in practice.

After lighting channel load calculation, the right product that is responsive to all the requirements can be selected.
The total lighting channel switch is 14, each of which can be connected to the load 10A of the relay module outputs
There are many products that we can use in this example project, but there are some considerations to keep in mind in order to be able to choose the appropriate devices in the project
Choose the Suitable Dimmer
After lighting channel load calculation, the right product that is responsive to all the requirements can be selected.
The total lighting channel is 4; use 2 for load 1.5A, 1 for load 2A, and 1 remaining for load 3A of the output.
There are many products that we can use in this example project, but there are some considerations to keep in mind in order to be able to choose the appropriate products in the project

The parental suite is taken as an example to see how the right product is chosen for the right spot.
